The 91st Academy Awards was held on Feb. 24th at the Dolby Theatre in LA. This year Oscars was one of the most diverse and widely appreciated by many viewers on social media. More films with people of color were recognized along with women and there was no host this year.

One of the most important factors for this year was the diversity. For the first time ever, Mexico won for best foreign language film by Alfonso Cuarón. He won three out of five Oscars he was nominated for.

Latinos were present and loud, making statements about the wall and fighting back about division. Spanish Oscar winner, Javier Bardem said “There are no borders, there are no walls, that can stop ingenuity and talent,” alongside actress Angela Bassett. While people cheered the audience agreed by nodding their heads.

Twitter users acknowledged and appreciated the Latino embracement throughout the Oscars. People started to make stats about the “Best Director” winners. Over the past decade all winners are Mexican. Winners such as Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro G. Inarritu, and Guillermo del Toro have won the award over the past decade.

It is true to say Latinos are making it known that they are here to stay in the industry for good. One beautiful moment was when star Diego Luna came out to present a clip of “Roma” that was nominated for best film, proudly showing the Mexico flag pin on his tuxedo and shared how exciting it is for him to be able to speak Spanish at this years Oscars.

KISS FM broadcaster Patty Rodriguez shared numerous of tweets showing her joy for all the Latino appreciation.

Yalitza Aparicio, the indigenous actress was nominated for “Best Actress” in “Roma.” She was accompanied by her mother and that alone made people’s hearts warm. Alina Cambero, a student at Fullerton College said: “I thought seeing someone who represents Latino culture in such a big way was beautiful to not only me but young girls at home.”

The 91st Academy Awards was a night for celebrating different diversities. Every director and movie star was given the chance to embrace their background.
