Crunch Time

Finals are approaching and the stress is on. What does not help is professors assigning unnecessary work a week before finals.

Students studying inside the Cerritos College library.

They should let us students focus the biggest test of the whole semester. I understand college is preparing you for the real world and you should expect a lot of workload but useless work is time consuming and a distraction.

Especially if you’re a student like me who has six classes to worry about and pass in order to graduate. If they want students to do well do not assign homework a week before because it is counterproductive.

When it comes to prioritizing a final is way more important than homework, lab work and in class assignment at this stage in the semester.

Recently I was assigned a lab assignment and I did not receive full credit due to my focus being on my final study guide. I lost five points out of 20 and it may not seem like a lot but it did affect my grade.

It’s a really stressful week to begin with and many people need months, weeks or days to study before a big exam. A lot of professors like to argue that college is supposed to prepare you for rigorous courses to come in the workforce but most of the time there is no reason to be so hard on your students.

These final weeks can also affect the mental health of students. Sometimes students crack under pressure and do not perform well. I personally know some people who do not attend school due to the stress and challenges it brought to their mental health.

Please professors be easy on your students. We are all stressed and have so much on our plate and we really want to do well but stress kills.
